Ace Tips: Ink Density Explained
When preparing artwork for print, one of the most common errors clients run into is a “high ink density” warning. This happens when too much ink is used in one spot of a design, which can cause problems like smudging, bleeding, or slow drying.
In this blog, we’ll break down what ink density means, why it matters, and simple ways to avoid this issue so your files are ready to print without a hitch.

What is Ink Density?
Proper Ink Density Values
Our print system flags raster items at any value above 310%, & vector items at values over 280%.
This number is calculated based upon the percentage of each CMYK value. For example, our "rich black" value is C30 M20 Y20 K100, which equals a value of 170%.
